A pair of gas tankers were destroyed in a fiercely burning fire in a Missoula industrial area Friday morning.
Missoula Fire crews were called to a Mountain West Co-op storage area on Raser Drive shortly after 10 a.m. with a report of smoke and explosions. When they arrived, they found two tanker trucks completely engulfed in flames.
At first, firefighters had to work quickly to get water and firefighting foam deployed on the dead end road. But within a few minutes, they were able to bring the situation under control.
Two expensive semi tractors were completely destroyed in the blaze, burning so completely there was little more than rims, exhaust stacks, and engine blocks left. The two tankers they were attached to were also heavily damaged.
An MFD battalion chief told MTN News that fortunately, the two tankers were empty, and the fire happened in an area away from any businesses or homes. The tankers were a low-pressure type, which is usually used to haul fuel products like diesel or gasoline.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
